Saturday morning I went to church with Natalie for morning mass. The boys didn’t want to go. They had Chinese school and so I told them they had to be at church by 9:25am so that we could leave straight from church to school. We talked about what time they had to leave the house and all was set.
When I left the house, both boys were playing and I wondered whether they would get to church on time. When mass was over, I was pleasantly surprised to see them waiting for me. I knew they would be there but at the same time wasn’t sure if they would remember considering that they were playing nicely at home.
Saturday night, Natalie and Andrew had sleepovers and it was just Matthew and myself. I usually go to church earlier Sunday morning before everyone else as I have choir rehearsal before mass. I asked Matthew if he wanted to come with me or just meet me in church like he did the day before with Andrew. At first he said he would come later and then decided that he should come with me. Here is his reason.
He said that he better come with me as it was Andrew that kept track of the time the day before to remember to leave the house on time. He wasn’t sure he would notice the time by himself. Andrew is the responsible one. Matthew sometimes or most time has his head in the clouds. The good thing about this is that he understands his limitations. I have to remember he is only 12, but at 12, I was taking the public bus to school on my own. I think if Matthew had to take the responsibility, he would. He has walked home from school by himself, baby sat his siblings among other things. Right now he is happy to be a kids and just go with the flow with no responsibilities…..
