Vitamin D Deficency and you

vitamin-dNatalie did a blood test with the Childrens’ Hospital oral health study a couple of months ago to check her vitamin D levels.  Unfortunately it was on the low side, slightly deficient, so yesterday I took my results to the doctor to get her recommendation.

She said that every child that is in the northern hemisphere in winter need 400 IU of vitamin D.  Unfortunately even if they play outside all day, the sun is so low in the sky that they do not get enough vitamin D from the sunlight.  If we were closer to the equator with the sun straight above us, 10 minutes a day is all we need to get our vitamin D intake.

For adults, she recommended that we take 1000 IU of vitamin D.  I checked with her to see if our diets could supplement it and she said there is so little in our foods that we may get our daily intake from about 10 glasses of milk a day!!  With research in the last couple of years, pediatricians have been telling parents to add vitamin D supplements to the childrens’ daily vitamins.  In time, she predicts that vitamin D will be added to our foods and drinks, as they realize that it is getting more important.

They believe that Vitamin D is important for the body to absorb calcium which helps develop healthy teeth and bones in young children.  According to her, they have not done enough long term studies to know exactly what the effects of vitamin D deficiency is.  Nothing immediate but problems might arise in the future like weak bones and unhealthy teeth formation etc…

If you are not sure, check with your doctor, see if they recommend that you add the supplement to your vitamin intake.  Vitamin might be more important than we realize.

I found a website with a little more information www.NaturalNews.com
