Passion to Help Kids Who Are Less Fortunate

As mentioned before I did a Passion Test with my friend Susan this Summer.  The first thing on my passion list was to “Give my time and energy to help the kids who are less fortunate”.  At first, I thought to myself, time and energy, how is that possible and thought what was I thinking…  That came before God and my family.  I think when I did that I figured if I was helping others, that was service to God too. I was going to redo my passions but decided to leave it for the time being.  Read on to see how I have done work on that passion already.

While we were in Georgia over the summer, we met a really nice couple from our Church.  They had lived in Canada before and approached us.  We became friends and we went over to their house for brunch one day.  While we were there, he showed us his project he did during his free time.  He filled shoe boxes with toys and necessities for unpreviledged kids in poor countries with the Samaritan’s Purse.

It started off for him a few years ago collecting shoe boxes and buying filling them with things for different age groups.  He really enjoyed it and now a few years later, he puts together thousands of shoe boxes for these kids each year.  He sources out items from all over, get them at cost or lower and puts them together.  He sends items like pens and pencils and note pads and stickers.  Things here we take for granted which they do not have.

I casually mentioned that if he needed any help, I would help him, it looked like fun.  Well needless to say, on my free days(which were not too many), during our second month in Georgia,  I went over to help with the packing. As you can see in the pictures, we had 30 shoeboxes which we placed on his pool table and we fill them with items that he had already presorted.  Wow what a project.  He takes about 9 months for him to do all these sorting and boxing them.  He has a huge storage shed in the back and stores his stock and packed boxes in.  Kyle had to help one day with the manual labour….

After helping him out the first day, I realized that I was fulfilling one of my passions.  To help other kids who are less fortunate.  The opportunity just presented it self.   He also mentioned that with my help this year he was able to exceed his goals.  That felt great.

A little lesson to learn. If you put out your intention, it will happen.
