English Lessons – “Work” Poem
The kids and I are learning the English Language together. The book we are using is First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind by Jessie Wise. It is for grade 1 and 2 students. I am using it for all the kids, even Matthew even though he is in Grade 3, so important to have a good foundation. Natalie is learning too, learning grammar, poems and learning to summarize stories too. I don’t think I know the basics well either. I figure if we all know the basics, it will help them when they are learning other languages too. Common Nouns and Proper Nouns?
This is one of the 2nd poem that they have learned. It really teaches some values early on. I have only repeated it a few time and they have it memorized already. So simple and yet so powerful!
“Work” Anonymous
Work while you work,
Play while you play;
This is the way
To be happy each day.
All that you do,
Do with your might
Things done by halves
Are never done right.

Hearing you discuss FLL 1 & 2 brings back lots of great memories from last year. It is an awesome book, so well written. I’m glad you chose to go with FLL. It does offer a great foundation and I can testify first hand how much our whole family learned last year. And as you said so rightly, the foundation strengthens your work in other languages.
As for the quality of the poetry selected, the author does a great job. I can still refer to those poems when discussing certain values with the kids. They know the poems, so it is easy to reference them and have a casual, but powerful discussion.
