The joys of Facebook – Social Media

I am on Facebook everyday, for the last year and a half at least.  Initially when I heard about Facebook, I remember how I would think that it was a waste of time.  I created an account and would only befriend people who requested me to be their friend.  It did feel good thought that people were thinking of me and wanting me to be their friend.  OK, I might have been naive, some of them just wanted a big circle of friends.  Networking…  Not a bad thing.

Somewhere along the line though, I started realizing that I had much to share with others.  That is when I jumped on the Facebook bandwagon and started finding friends.  The best was finding my buddies from CJC in Singapore whom I last saw in in 2007 just before I left Singapore.  It was cool to see where everyone had moved on to after 20 years.

Last week my friend TNT from University found me on Facebook, we got together for lunch Friday and had a blast catching up.  We figured that it has been about 17 years.  There was just so much to say and share….  Tim we will have to get together soon.

I have heard that if the people from your past are not in your life now, there is a reason for it.  I don’t think that is totally true. When you are young and make some really good friends, and somehow when you leave town, keeping in touch gets overwhelming.  You often wonder how they are doing and wonder how to find them.  Thanks to Facebook, that is possible.  Now I just need to find my childhood friend from Australia who I grew up with in Singapore, Natalie Mills, she might still be in Australia.  Anyone know…

While we were in Georgia, I started chatting with my University Buddy’s brother’s wife(sounds complicating?), Sareli Deraj on Facebook.    Well, I knew who she was in Engineering but didn’t really know her back then.  Since coming back to Winnipeg, we have been sharing much information with each other, learning from each other.  It is great and the kids have a blast when we get together.  Makes it more worthwhile.

So Facebook is an awesome resource for many things.  Finding friends, learning from each other, there have been many discussions on whether we should get the H1N1 shot or why are we still using plastic bags.   Keeping in touch with friends and finding new ones.  If I can’t see my friends in person, I can see them on Facebook!  Is the world getting smaller?
