Our Day in New Orleans

Right after breakfast of milk and cereal in the hotel room, we all headed into the French Quarter Visitor Center for a FREE tour of the French Quarter. The tour started at 9:30pm but we had to be there right when it opened at 9am to get the first 25 tickets for free.

The tour started in the court yard and while the tour guide Patricia was talking it started raining, gently and then it down poured.  At this time Kyle offered to go back to the hotel to get the rain coats.  So he ran the 10 blocks back to the hotel to get them.  While he was gone, Patricia moved us into the carriage way and talking more about the buildings and more history of New Orleans.  What a great history lesson.  Kyle got back in time for the continuation of the tour.  Good thing we had the rain coats while we moved on to the next stop.  She taught us about the different style homes along Decanter Street, American homes vs Creole homes.  The tour was worth every penny, right it was free. During the tour she took us to the water front and along the river to Jackson Square.  The history lesson was just awesome and interesting.

We walked through the French Market and had lunch at the French Market Cafe, second oldest building in New Orleans, and home of the best Gumbo in town.  It actually was really good.  I had alligator meat and gumbo and Kyle had the combo.  It was so yummy.  They also had live music playing.  Matthew complained that the music was too loud so we sat inside in the air conditioning but could here the music faintly.

After lunch we took the street car to the ferry terminal and took the ferry to Algiers.  Quaint little town, nothing too much to see.  We spoke to a local who lived in Algiers that during Hurricane Katrina, he was on the roof of his home waiting to be save.  He has since rebuilt his home higher off the ground.  He told us during Katrina, the water levels were so high, the ferry terminal second floor was under water!!

We took another street car to city park, it was interesting to see the sights and sounds of other parts of New Orleans.  It was so hot and Natalie had fallen asleep, we decided to hop back on the street car and head back to the hotel.  Otherwise we would have to wait for about 45 minutes for another street car.  With explaining different instructions to the tourist, he is off schedule.

We came back to the hotel to relax, I guess the heat and humidity just takes the energy out of you.  Kyle took the kids to look at some art shops that we had browsed at the night before.  After which we took the kids to the indoor pool.  It was so warm, I think it was warmer than the hot tub at the Sheraton in Orlando.  The kids had such a great time and didn’t even want to get out.

We took a stroll to Gumbo Shop for dinner.  I finally had the Orka Seafood Gumbo.  It was so delicious.  Kyle had soft crab and pasta.  So easy to eat.  So far the food has been great.  Tomorrow we are going to Cafe Du Monde for Beignets.  Looking forward to that.

So we had to walk back through Bourbon street as the boys had requested.  Some scenes are not appropriate but they have to learn sooner or later, I was hoping later…

Everyone is in bed, the humidity really knocks you out.  Maybe that is a good thing.  We have another long drive to Houston tomorrow, we are going to visit my Dad’s friend.  I think I was a little girl in Singapore when I last saw him, but I have seen pictures of him.  The day after that, we are headed to Dallas to visit friends that I havn’t seen for about 20 years, friends I grew up with in Singapore.  Looking forward to a great visit.
