Mummy Thoughts

Fort Walton Beach to New Orleans

Being in Central time, the kids woke up an hour earlier which worked out really well.  We had breakfast at the motel and then packed up and headed to the beach again.  Had to squeeze in another beach time.  It is a little more inconvenient not staying on the beach but that didn’t stop us.  We were spoilt staying right on the beach on Amelia Island.

There was a pier there and we decided to go walk along it before heading in for a swim.  It costs a dollar and since we didn’t have any money with us, we had to skip it.  We went to the little playground under the pier instead, the kids all had fun.  The beach we were at were lined with tons of restaurant and bars, so they had facilities for kids.

The morning was cooler but the water was so warm.  Natalie, Kyle and I headed out into the ocean.  Not even two minutes, I felt a little pain around my knee and Natalie started shouting.  My worse fear, jelly fish.  She scream and cried, and nothing would calm her.  I ran to the van and grabbed some vinegar and poured it on her upper thigh.  By that time, it was all red and bumpy and you can see where the tendrils dragged along her leg.  She got the bulk of it.  We were right by the seaside patrol and was able to get a topical anesthetic.  She didn’t want to move for a long time after, just wanted to lie on the beach.  The boys played in the sand and Kyle and I took turns playing in the water.  Natalie didn’t want me to go too far away from her so I just did a little bit of Yoga by the beach.  Why not?

I wasn’t too sure how long the pain would have lasted with the jelly fish sting so we planned to give Natalie some antihistamin but she didn’t feel any more pain.  I guess it only lasted for about an hour.

After showering back at the motel, we went to the grocery store to get some food, since it was almost lunch time.  The plan was to drive till we found a park where we could eat at.  This is beach country, must be a park somewhere.  We stopped in Narvaree and the views from there was so beautiful.  We watched people fish and across from the water ways, were many high rise resorts.

Driving away after lunch I realized that there was a bridge on the other side of that island that went into Pensacola, Florida, we had to take the scenic route.  We went over to the island and it was just sand and no vegetation, I guess the hurricanes just blow right thorough there and nothing else has a chance.  It was interesting to see the homes on stilts and wonder what it is like when the winds blow through…

Driving along, the homes stopped and we entered into Gulf Islands National Seashore, Santa Rosa Area.  It was pure what sand with a single road for miles with pieces of pavement all over the sand.  Kyle and I figured it might have been road that was ripped out and thrown around during a storm.  Very interesting and cool discovery.  The drive took us into Pensacola and more high rises and more homes.  It was amazing to see how many homes were for sale.  It would be a great time to get a vacation home, you get to pick whatever you want!!

When we drove through Pensacola, it was already 2:30pm.  We left the motel at 11:30am.  I think we only drove 40 miles in 3 hours including lunch….  Good thing New Orleans wasn’t too far.  We went through 4 states in one afternoon.  Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. We also drove through Mobile, Alabama, I didn’t realize that they had cruises form there.  They had the port right in town.  Very cool.  Matthew is learning about all the different states in the US.  I guess it’s his Geography lesson!!

We pulled into the Holiday Inn in the French Quarter in New Orleans at around 6pm.  We drove through the narrow streets to get to the hotel.  The kids were excited to get here.  We had bagel and cream cheese dinner and then headed out for a night walk.  Tonight he kids had a lesson on life.  We went along Royal street with all the quaint shops and walked back along Bourbon Street.  The road is closed to traffic at night and there were lots of people but still lot of room to walk.  What I read about Bourbon Street is true, a mixture of food and sights and activities.  I don’t think we saw any other kids on the streets tonight.  The street was colourful and bright, they enjoyed the walk.

When we got back to the hotel, we figured out that there was a pool here on the 10th floor and the whole floor was one level.  I forgot to mention that we are on the 9th floor which is the first floor of rooms, 7 floors of parking, lobby on the main floor.  Our floor is weird.  It is 3 levels, out of the life, there are a couple of steps down, then down the hall, four steps down and then another 3 steps down.  It was fun when we had to bring our stuff to the room the cart only went so far!!  We are figuring our the design of the hotel.  We could just ask I guess.

Tomorrow will be a fun day of exploring…  Can’t believe we’ve made it to New Orleans, people have said that it has been raining and humid all week, and it is forecast for rain tomorrow.  We are prepared with our rain coats.  It is currently 78F/25C, perfect weather.
