Mummy Thoughts

Road Trip To The Georgian Coast

On Thursday, Kyle and I were talking about what to do for the weekend.  Should we go to one of the National Parks since it was free?  Or do something else.  Now that we were in Georgia, we were going to take advantage of being in this part of the country and do things and visit places.  We were not sure what to do.  I did my research and thought, Huricane season is coming, we should head out to the coast before the seas got too rough.

Saturday morning bright and early, we packed up the kids and drove 3 hours to Savannah on the coast of Georgia.  There was a thick fog while we were leaving, it was a very cool sight, the sun trying to shine through the fog and clouds! Sun shining through the fog

There wasn’t too much complaining from the back since they are so used to travelling, I brought books and it help keep them occupied.  I am so glad that they can keep themselves busy.  At least this time the van wasn’t so packed!!

When we got to Savannah, we were pleasently surprise to see how beautiful the city was.  I guess I didn’t know what to expect, big tree and overflowing…  We only did the drive by sight seeing again as we decided to go to Fort Pulaski which is 15 miles outside Savannah.

Fort Pulaski was fun, it is the first fort that we have all been to that has a moat.  We did a tour of the fort and learned the history of the fort and more information about the civil war of 1861.  While we were there, they shot the cannon, and also shot the musket.  It was pretty loud and we had to cover our ears, needless to say Natalie wasn’t too happy about it.

After visiting the fort, it was time for lunch and they recommended going to Tybee Island for lunch and maybe a swim by the beach.  Natalie really wanted to go to the beach, so we headed there for lunch, I just thought that it was a beach with a light house and one or two places to eat but it was a little beach resort town.  Very quaint and colourful.img_00651

So after lunch we headed for the beach, the sky was getting a little dark but we decided that we had to go in for at least a little dip.  We really only had a 3 minute dip because as soon as we were in, we jumps a few waves and then the life guards blew their whistles, I didn’t even get my hair wet yet.  The beach cleared out right away and within 10 minutes it was pouring buckets, just enough time for us to get back into the van.

We were quite disappointed but 3 minutes in the water is better than nothing.  So we continued on our journey and headed north to Hilton Head, South Carolina. We had to go through Savannah to get on the highway and with the pouring rain, the roads were flooding.

We did a little more drive by sight seeing in Savannah and drove on Factor’s Walk along the Savannah River, it had cobble stone and rock roads.  Very cool.  I think we need to go back to Savannah again.  img_01011

I just hear about Hilton Head was really nice and wanted to check it out.  When we got there, it was really nice, like a high end beach resort.  The rain had stopped by the time we got there so we headed down to the beach again.  This time we had a good swim and played in the waves.  Even Natalie who doesn’t like to get her head wet was jumping in the wave and getting splashed.

After the beach it was almost 7pm so we headed to Smoke house which was right in the parking lot and had dinner before driving home.

We were not looking forward to the 4 hour drive home.  After a long fun filled day, it was the last thing we wanted to do.  The kids were fed and all fell asleep on the drive home.  We made it home before midnight and was so happy to be back in our beds.

What a wonderful, educational and exciting day, stay tune for more of our travels…
